Zoo Gets a Boost from Spring Giving Opportunities

May 26, 2020

The Abilene Zoo was among the many nonprofits forced to temporarily close its doors to the public during the COVID-19 crisis. This cut off a major revenue source for one of Abilene's top tourist attractions.

Because of pressing nonprofit needs like the zoo's, CFA offered a couple of giving opportunities for the community - the Support Abilene effort, which raised more than $173,000 for specific nonprofit needs related to the pandemic; and Abilene Gives, a 24-hour day of giving which raised more than $1.3 million for local nonprofits on May 5.

The zoo is a great example of an organization that has gotten some reprieve from these campaigns. The zoo received more than $4,000 from the Support Abilene Fund and a whopping $47,000 during Abilene Gives.

"The community has shown great support for the zoo, and the monies raised will continue to provide the highest standard of food and veterinary care for the animals that call the Abilene Zoo home," said Jesse Pottebaum, Director of the Abilene Zoo.

In addition to Support Abilene and Abilene Gives, CFA held its annual spring grant cycle, awarding more than $297k to local nonprofits.
