Jay Hatcher Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, established by the Alumni Association of the Abilene Citizens Police Academy, honors the memory of Abilene police detective Jay Hatcher, who died tragically in a pipeline explosion in Potosi, September 2000. Jennifer Bray (at the time was assistance news director at KTXS-TV in Abilene) wrote an inspiring article about Jay shortly after his death and in it, she stated, “The outpouring of respect and decency that occurred during and after Jay’s funeral wouldn’t have happened there {referring to Houston area}. That’s how we differ from the big cities.”
