Scholarship Honors Sam and Ellen Webb

August 06, 2019

by Carol Dromgoole, Fundholder

In celebration of Ellen Webb’s 98th birthday on July 9, her family established the endowed Sam and Ellen Webb Albany Heritage Scholarship.

Beginning in 2020, a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to an Albany graduating senior who has participated in Fandangle and other school and community activities. The scholarship fund will be managed by the Community Foundation of Abilene.

“We wanted to do something meaningful to honor Mom on her birthday,” said her daughter, Carol May Dromgoole. “An endowed scholarship means that Mom and Dad and the Webb family will continue to be involved in the Albany community they have loved with all their hearts.”

Sam Webb, who died in 2008, was a longtime business, civic, and church leader in Albany. He and Ellen married in 1951. Ellen worked in the family insurance business and was very involved in school, church, and community activities. She is well known for her delicious cooking and published a cookbook, You’ll be Going Back for Seconds, in 2007. She now lives in Abilene near her daughter.

On her birthday, the family presented her a certificate announcing the scholarship, accompanied by letters from the Community Foundation acknowledging each family member’s participation.

Ellen was moved to tears. “It’s the best birthday present ever,” she said.
