COVID-19: Support Nonprofit Needs

CFA has established the Support Abilene Fund to support local needs related to the COVID-19 crisis. You can either make a general donation to the fund, or you can designate your gift to meet specific nonprofit needs listed below.

These needs are organized by three categories: Emergency Aid to Individuals, Nonprofit Operational Needs, and Local Business Support.

Emergency Aid to Individuals (food, shelter, utility assistance, etc.)

  • Need: Shelter and outreach supplies for people experiencing homelessness; and sick leave for new employees
  • Amount Requested: $5,000
  • Details: Funding will provide supplies to distribute at the Hope Haven shelter and for street outreach. Supplies include: portable hand-washing stations, hand sanitizer, tissues, paper towels, disposable face masks, thermometers and other protective materials. Funds are also being used to accommodate those with COVID-19 symptoms through isolation and quarantine locations. Some staff members have missed work due to illness (not COVID-19) and do not yet qualify for sick leave. Funds will also cover lost wages.
  • Need: Abilene United Day Camp for children of essential personnel
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: In order to care for children on an extended basis, AWC needs to hire additional staff, purchase cleaning supplies, purchase snacks and water for staff and/or children, fund activities, pay employees for extended hours, etc.
  • Need: Funds to help provide crisis services to individuals and families
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: City Light is providing assistance to people with needs including: food, utility payments, rent, funds to get birth certificates, identification, gasoline, bus passes, clothing, job training, prescription assistance, and other as needed.
  • Need: Technological needs to support clients remotely
  • Amount Requested: $2,250
  • Details: FaithWorks is requesting 10 Chrome notebooks and monthly Zoom subscriptions so that the current FaithWorks students may complete coursework this semester. After this season, the notebooks and Zoom will be used for advanced technology training so that graduates will be even better prepared for gainful and long-term employment.
  • Need: Stock warehouse with food to distribute to people in need
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: Inventory on hand is very low. Shipments move out very quickly once they are received. The food bank's revenue budget is structured to support our annual operating budget, and the organization needs funding to help it serve these urgent needs outside of its existing budget.
  • Need: Support for emergency shelter for children ages 5-17
  • Amount Requested: $5,000
  • Details: Due to the closures of local schools and other facilities, Harmony has had to call in extra staff to provide 24-hour daily care and supervision of children at its emergency shelter. With other resources closed, Harmony staff are now solely responsible for the educational, recreational, spiritual and physical needs of these children 24 hours a day.
  • Need: Meet the growing requests for temporary housing and other basic needs
  • Amount Requested: $3,000
  • Details: Houses for Healing, which provides short-term housing for people facing medical crisis, has seen an uptick in requests for help with temporary shelter, groceries, utilities and diapers/baby formula. This comes at a time when donations have dipped.
  • Need: Continuing education for children with learning disabilities
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: This nonprofit school is funded through tuition, endowments, and grants. This funding request is to offer continuing education for students whose families, many of whom already face financial challenges, are experiencing even greater financial hardships due to COVID-19.
  • Need: Support expenses for formerly-incarcerated women who have lost employment or had a reduction of hours
  • Amount Requested: $5,000
  • Details: Many of these women work in the service industry and are experience a drastic reduction of hours. These women pay rent to live at the New Beginnings homes, which supports the organization's operations. In addition to giving these women a safe place to reenter society, New Beginnings equips them with life skills, spiritual formation, and mentoring.
  • Need: iPads for St. John's Episcopal School 2nd-5th graders
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: Due to COVID-19, SJES is moving to an online learning platform. The school is requesting 46 iPads to facilitate online learning at home. Many students have been displaced and/or have other siblings using devices that might be available in there home.


Nonprofit Operational Needs

  • Need: Support for expanded learning opportunities
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: The museum is expanding its internet-based learning programs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Any support provided would directly impact AISD students and students worldwide by supporting education about the Second World War and its impact on American and world society.
  • Need: Offset lost revenue due to production cancellation
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: Due to COVID-19, the Abilene Community Theatre has shut its doors for the immediate future and has either canceled or postponed all productions. Without incoming ticket revenue, ACT will not be able to afford to reopen our doors after this summer. This funding will help ACT re-open after the COVID-19 crisis has subsided.
  • Need: Funding for operational and program costs
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: Abilene Palm House has had to amend programs and operations due to COVID-19 but continues to serve local women, children and their families working to overcome trauma. Funds will support general operations and the organization's ability to continue serving people.
  • Need: Funding for operational and overhead expenses
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: Abilene Performing Arts Company classes have been indefinitely suspended, and its May show will most likely be canceled. This means APAC will not receive two months of class tuition and will not be able to fundraise through May Show ticket sales.
  • Need: Offset lost revenue due to event cancellations
  • Amount Requested: $6,800
  • Details: APL's largest sources of income are from rentals of the historic Elks Arts Center and membership dues/donations. However, due to the COVID-19 crisis, the organization is having to cancel numerous events and issue refunds, and donors are cutting back financially. Funding will support overhead and other operational costs.
  • Need: Funds to provide essential healthcare and food for the animals
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: The zoo has had to close during a season when it would typically see around 62,000 visitors. The zoo relies on ticket sales, zoo visits, memberships, and education program fees for revenue required to operate. Funds will support zoo operations, including providing food and critical medical care to the animals that call the zoo home.
  • Need: Offset lost revenue due to event cancellations
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: Funds will help offset a portion of the funding that is normally provided through annual fundraising events, which have been canceled due to COVID-19. This funding will support general operations, so the ranch can continue to support the basic needs that are provided to young boys in the Boys Program and single mothers and their children in the Family Care Program.
  • Need: Offset lost revenue due to event cancellations
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: BBBS Abilene's Match Support Team will continue to serve as a hub for hundreds of families providing resources for those who may be affected by COVID-19. Because the organization has already had to postpone one of its largest fundraisers, this grant can help make a huge impact on the BBBS budget.
  • Need: Offset lost revenue due to event cancellations
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: COVID-19 is dealing a significant blow to the Butman Camp organization already. With summer, its busiest season, approaching, the nonprofit's budget could take an even greater hit.
  • Need: Funds for staff salaries and shelter/care for horses
  • Amount Requested: $5,000
  • Details: Camp Able has suspended all in-person equine-assisted therapy programs until further notice. To provide ongoing learning opportunities for its participants, Camp Able's instructors and staff are now preparing online instructional videos and interactive sessions. Making sure it can continue to compensate its instructors is imperative for the long-term sustainability of Camp Able. During the shutdown, Camp Able must also continue to feed and care for its 58 horses every day.
  • Need: Funds to provide services to cancer patients
  • Amount Requested: $5,000
  • Details: COVID-19 has led to a struggle obtaining funds needed to meet the direct needs of cancer patients requesting help, and the ongoing operational funding necessary for CSN to be able to provide programs and services.
  • Need: Funding for general operational and program support
  • Amount Requested: $7,500
  • Details: The economic impact of COVID-19 has affected the Center's annual membership drive. CCA needs funds to support both its general operations and arts programs for people such as military veterans and refugee children.
  • Need: Offset lost revenue due to event delays/cancellations
  • Amount Requested: $7,500
  • Details: Chorus Abilene has had to cancel or reschedule four spring events, leaving the organization with no income from fundraising or ticket sales for the remainder of its fiscal year, which ends in May.
  • Need: Funds to support basic needs for individuals and families
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: CSC is seeking funds in anticipation of a drop in funding sources due to the economic impact of COVID-19. All donations will help aid in providing basic needs such as food, clothing, transportation, household items, documentation and some dental assistance for people who struggle with economic instability.
  • Need: Funding to support general operations and programs
  • Amount Requested: $5,000
  • Details: COVID-19 has interrupted two of CCC's fundraising events - the Abilene 100 and the Good Neighbor Breakfast. CCC will use funds to pay its staff who live in North Abilene neighborhoods and build relationships through shared meals, events, and being actively present as neighbors.
  • Need: Operational needs to offset fundraising losses.
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: COVID-19 has forced Global Samaritan to indefinitely postpone its spring fundraiser at a time when its services are required more than ever. Operating funds are needed to help Global Samaritan continue to provide storage space and supplies, including medical supplies, to other Big Country nonprofits.
  • Need: Funding to offset the cost of lost income due to store closures.
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: Goodwill-West Texas has had to make the difficult decision to close its stores in order to keep employees and shoppers safe and healthy. Without the stores, Goodwill-West Texas has no ability to accomplish its mission to provide opportunities to people with barriers to employment. Funding will be used to offset the cost of lost income so GWT can continue to provide sustainability through employment and build hope and dignity for those we serve.
  • Need: Funds to offset lost wages for employees
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: If Habitat has to close for an extended period, its employees will likely run out of vacation and sick time. Habitat is requesting funds to continue to pay employees and replace lost wages.
  • Need: Offset lost revenue due to fundraising event delay/cancellation
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: The adverse economic impact of COVID-19 has affected I-CAN's annual fundraising drive. I-CAN needs funds to support its general operations budget and to cover basic overhead costs.
  • Need: Funding to support general operations
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: In light of the financial impact of COVID-19, Junior Achievement is seeking funding to support its general operations so it can continue to provide kindergarten-12th grade programs foster work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills.
  • Need: Staff salary support
  • Amount Requested: $4,600
  • Details: This grant would allow Live Missions to keep its doors open and continue to support its staff and their families. Live Missions is requesting half of one month's staff salary to continue to fulfill its mission of Christian discipleship.
  • Need: Support for increased meal demand and to offset cancelled fundraisers
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: Requests for meals for home-bound senior citizens are pouring in daily. The need has outgrown Meals on Wheels Plus's financial resources. Donations are down and four upcoming large fundraisers have been cancelled. There is a critical need for financial support as well as for volunteers.
  • Need: Offset lost revenue due to event cancellation

  • Details: Funds will provide basic needs such as food and continued therapy to children in foster care who live at Audrey Grace House. One fundraising event benefiting New Horizons has already been canceled. New Horizons is making sure kids stay active by doing crafts, cookouts, and fun activities outside.
  • Need: Offset lost revenue due to event cane
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: April usually brings essential operating revenue to Noah Project through its annual golf tournament, which raises around $75,000 for Noah Project's general operating expenses. The organization is seeking funding to offset this lost revenue.
  • Need: Emergency Operational Expenses
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: Two-thirds of The Paramount's operating funds come through ticket sales, concessions, or rentals. Restrictions on crowd sizes forced the theatre to postpone or cancel all shows over the next six weeks, prompting a need for emergency operational support.
  • Need: Fundraising Event Support
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: This funding will allow Reach for a Difference to keep its two most important events available to families -- the Sensory Santa and the organization's new Social Club for students aged middle through high school.
  • Need: Program support and funds for an anticipated spike in need
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: RVCC counselors had full caseloads prior to this terrible virus, and, sadly, RVCC anticipates COVID-19 may lead to an increased need. Funds will help ensure there is no interruption to the vital care and counseling these victims require.
  • Need: General operations and program support
  • Amount Requested: $10,000
  • Details: The Salvation Army continues to provide critical emergency shelter, food and services to assist men, women and children in crisis, satisfying their basic needs, and the organization anticipates an increase in clients during the COVID-19 crisis.

  • Details: Funds will be utilized to directly support the Abilene-area staff and overhead costs to maintain programming within the Abilene office. In response to the pandemic, the SOTX-Abilene & Concho Valley office has launched the S.O. Connect program which includes virtual ways to challenge its athletes to remain fit, active, and healthy during this time.

  • Details: Funding to support the organization in its faith-based mission to reach and mentor young people.

Local Business Support


Need
: Support for small, local businesses affected by COVID-19
Amount Requested: $10,000
Details: This fund will support operating expenses and day-to-day needs for eligible businesses in the Abilene region. All small business grant funds will be distributed through nonprofit organizations, such as the Abilene Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The Support Small Businesses of Abilene (Facebook group) is leading the effort to raise local assistance funds.
