Harvey Relief Fund at the Greater Houston Community Foundation

Houston’s mayor has set up a fund at the Greater Houston Community Foundation to house donations for Harvey relief efforts.

The Foundation writes on its website, “After receiving an overwhelming number of inquiries from citizens and companies who want to help, Mayor Sylvester Turner has established the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund that will accept tax deductible flood relief donations for victims that have been affected by the recent floods.”

Avoid Giving to a Scam

Be careful to avoid giving to scams in the aftermath of a disaster.  You can verify a nonprofit organization’s status by searching for the organization on sites like Guide Star, the IRS Exempt Organization Select Check tool, the Texas Comptroller Taxable Entity Search, and the Better Business Bureau.

Remember, monetary donations are typically best after a disaster.  You can read here about how tangible donations, though sent from a well-meaning donor, often go to waste.
